From Lab Meetings to Lunchboxes: How Lion’s Mane Helps Me Stay Mentally ‘Clear’

As an academic researcher and mom of two spirited little kids, my brain operates in a constant state of cognitive gymnastics. At any given moment, I’m toggling between homework help, manuscript edits, meeting prep, scheduling doctor’s appointments, snack distribution, Zoom calls, and figuring out why someone is devastated that a granola bar fell on the floor.

It’s a lot of mental tabs to keep open — and unlike my browser, I can’t simply hit “close all.”

Therefore, finding helpful tools that make me feel even slightly more mentally organized has become essential.

One of the simplest additions I’ve made?

Lion’s mane mushroom, a key ingredient in Original Nutrition’s Clear.

Why lion’s mane caught my attention in the first place

I don’t take supplements lightly. My academic brain demands evidence — or at the very least, a compelling physiological rationale — before I add anything to my daily routine. Lion’s mane mushroom was interesting to me, not because it came with lofty promises, but because the science behind it is steadily emerging in a way that feels worth watching.

Lion’s mane contains bioactive compounds called hericenones and erinacines, which researchers are studying for their ability to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) pathways and support overall cognitive function.

That doesn’t mean lion’s mane is a magical neural upgrade or a shortcut to genius. It does mean that the mushroom interacts with brain-related pathways in ways scientists are actively exploring, and in some early studies, the outcomes look promising.

As someone who teaches, writes manuscripts, manages research projects, and still needs to remember which kid needs to bring a show-and-tell item on Thursdays, “promising” is enough to pique my interest.

Clear checked the box for “scientifically intriguing, not gimmicky, and not promising me superpowers.”

    That’s my sweet spot.

Where lion’s mane fits into my real life

Here’s the truth: the reason I keep taking Clear has less to do with academic curiosity and everything to do with preserving my sanity.

I usually take it during the morning whirlwind, somewhere between glancing at my email, assembling lunches, and attempting to locate missing shoes (why is something always missing?). In that swirl of tasks, this tiny ritual feels like a moment of intentionality carved out for me that optimizes my daily mental function.

Do I suddenly become a hyper-focused productivity machine?

    Not quite.

I’m still human, and my children still possess an uncanny ability to cause miniature crises in 10-minute intervals. But I do notice a difference.

What “mental clarity” feels like for me

For me, the biggest shift is that my thoughts feel less crowded.

On any given day, my mind is overflowing with application reviews, project timelines, course prep, research ideas, kid logistics, dinner plans, and a running internal monologue reminding me to reply to emails that I absolutely will forget to reply to. Even when everything is fine, it often feels like my brain is trying to solve 14 puzzles at once.

When I take Clear consistently, that sense of “traffic congestion” in my head eases. It doesn’t eliminate the tasks, but it helps me feel like the tasks are ordered instead of stacked.

It’s a small shift, but meaningful shifts often are.

I’m not chasing peak productivity or trying to transform myself into a different version of who I already am. What I want is clarity and that’s exactly what Clear supports. On days when my mental load is high, and the transitions between researcher brain, leader brain, and mom brain happen at rapid speed, that subtle clarity goes a long way.

Why I don’t treat Clear like magic

Supplements sometimes get marketed as miracle solutions, and I have zero interest in that narrative — as a scientist or as a human who lives in the real world.

What it is, for me, is a simple, science-aligned supplement that helps my mind feel more grounded amid the beautiful chaos that is working full-time and raising small humans. Clear isn’t magic for me, and I don’t take it expecting some kind of dramatic cognitive transformation. What it offers is practical, steady support.

The research is still evolving. I like that. It feels honest. Lion’s mane isn’t a shortcut; it’s a supportive tool. It takes what my brain is already doing — juggling, sorting, processing — and gives those processes a little breathing room.

    That’s enough.

How Clear supports the many versions of “me”

The biggest compliment I can give Clear is that it helps me shift between the many roles I play without feeling mentally scrambled in the process.

In the research world, transitions are constant — between meetings, writing, data analysis, mentoring, and teaching. At home, the transitions are even faster and often louder. I go from discussing experimental design to explaining why we don’t keep rocks in our shoes. From setting section deadlines to negotiating with a toddler about the color of their cup.

I don’t need a supplement to change me. I need one that supports me.

Clear helps those transitions feel smoother and less chaotic. It gives my brain a little more runway as I switch gears, which means fewer internal collisions as I move through the day. It doesn’t erase the cognitive load, but it makes it feel less heavy.

And when your life oscillates between high-level academic work and the unpredictable patterns of young children, “less heavy” is a victory.

    Why this simple ritual stuck

I’ve researched plenty of supplements over the years and abandoned most of them within weeks. The ones that last are the ones that fit naturally into the rhythm of my life and offer a real, felt benefit — even a subtle one.

    Clear fits.

It supports the parts of my day that feel the most overwhelming and the most important.

It doesn’t try to replace coffee or promise a complete cognitive overhaul.

It simply helps my mind feel more grounded, organized, and capable of handling the rapid transitions that define my world at the moment.

Anything that helps me juggle the layers of researcher, leader, and mom brains — with fewer internal collisions — earns a permanent spot in my morning routine.
