A 2024 prospective study of women found that those consuming at least one serving of
blueberries per week had a meaningfully reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss in older adults, compared to those who ate none. At two or more servings per week, the risk was roughly two-thirds lower.
Again, these effects are nothing more than anthocyanins doing what they do best: protecting cellular health. When it comes to eye health specifically, anthocyanins have been shown to protect retinal pigment epithelial cells (a critical cell layer at the back of the eye) from oxidative and light-induced damage.
